Is it inappropriate to wear a suit to a funeral?

A friend of mine, his 24 year old daughter passed away. I never met her but I'm going to the funeral to support my friend. Would it be inappropriate to wear the full blown suit? Its grey, 3 button. Or should I just wear a nice shirt and slacks? No jacket? I just don't want to be overdressed.
