Sometimes people push other people away when they are scared. Maybe a conversation with him and reassuring him how much you love him and why you wouldnt' leave him, despite him being gone in the army might change his mind. It sounds to me like he was afraid you would leave him, so to gain some control over his fears, he left you, even though he is still in love with you.
