Can someone get fired because their license was suspended?

i didnt even know was licensw was suspended. I rode someone elses motorcycle to town and some lady rearended me. four months later I hit a deer while driving company vehicle and the cop tells me my license was suspended for failing to show proof of insurance on the motorcycle wreck four months ago. I had no idea it wasnt insured and the bmv sent notices to the my old address so i never knew they got suspended. so my employer fired me because they said I knew my license was suspended. Now they are fighting my unemployement too. the suspension is over in about three more weeks. HELP, what can I do ?
