Would I still have to go to college to become a firefighter if I went in the military first?

I looking at joining either the Army or Air Force as a Firefighter, but I know that in the civilian world it is VERY hard to become a career firefighter. I was wondering if having prior Firefighting experience from the military would help me (my recruiter says yes, but then again, they will say ANYTHING to you) more than a college degree would. I just really don't want to go to college (I scored a 92 on my ASVAB and a 31 on my ACT, very smart, but I HATE school!!!). Plus I can't afford college and got horrible grades in high school (didn't give two sh*ts about it).
